FAQs
Do I need horse experience?
No, you do not need any horse experience to attend sessions. We adapt each session to your comfort level,
and everything is explained and supported.
Will I be riding the horse?
No, Grounded Steps sessions do not involve riding. All work with the horses is done from the ground.
Who can attend?
Anyone can attend Grounded Steps. We support children, teens, and adults. Sessions can also be tailored for
families, small groups, workplaces, and retreat groups.
What can Equine Assisted Therapy Help with?
Equine Assisted Therapy can help people improve their overall mental health and wellbeing, including stress,
anxiety, confidence, emotional regulation, social skills, communication, boundaries, relationship challenges,
neurodiversity, self-awareness, and personal growth. It is not a quick fix or guaranteed solution, but it offers a
meaningful and engaging way to explore skills and patterns in a safe, supportive environment.
What happens in a session?
Each session is different, depending on your goals. A session may include checking in, grounding activities,
time with the horses, observation, grooming, leading, groundwork, reflection, emotional regulation strategies,
or practical skill-building. Sessions usually last 60 minutes and are scheduled weekly, fortnightly, or monthly,
based on your needs and preferences.
What happens in my first session?
Your first session is an introduction to Grounded Steps. We will talk about what brings you here, your needs
and goals, and what support might help you. You may meet the horses from a distance, walk around the farm,
or just settle into the space. There is no pressure to touch or work directly with the horses right away. The
session is about getting to know you, and we move at your pace.
What should I wear?
Please wear closed-in shoes and comfortable outdoor clothing. A hat, sunscreen, and weather-appropriate
clothes are recommended, as sessions are held outdoors.
What if I am nervous around horses?
That is completely okay. You will never be asked to do anything you are not comfortable with. Sessions can
start with simply watching the horses from a distance outside their paddock.
Are the horses forced to participate?
No. The horses’ well-being is central to our work. We respect their body language, comfort, and choices. If a
horse shows signs that they need space or rest, we honour that.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes. Counselling is confidential, and your privacy is respected, subject to certain legal and ethical limits. These
limits include concerns about safety, the risk of harm, child protection matters, or situations where information
is required by law. This will be discussed with you if there are concerns.
Can I use NDIS funding?
Yes. Many self-managed and plan-managed NDIS participants have used their funding for our services. Please contact Grounded Steps to discuss whether our services align with your goals, such as capacity building, social skills, or daily living skills.
